Reel Technique - Spiral Strike

Postby Xedma » Sun Dec 29, 2013 1:38 am

The Spiral Strike is an easily replicable technique for dealing massive damage using the Overdrive. This technique can also be used in combination with Yo-Yo Acceleration and Correctional Hooking to increase the amount of damage Spiral Strike will deal.

correct wire placement

This technique is almost entirely dependent on having a hook correctly attached to the center of a titan's nape. This is because this technique uses the Overdrive. If the wire is placed a little bit off, it might still work but not as effectively due to collisions. If the wire is placed too low or high, it will fail all-together. After you place the hook, you rotate around your target to their front. When you are directly in front of the titan, reeling will spiral you into your wire on the nape and automatically activating the Overdrive. This technique can be used essentially any time there is a wire correctly placed on a titan's nape and can be a go-to method for killing a titan you are flying past if their nape is exposed and within hooking distance. Note: hooking distance is relative to your momentum meaning that you can hook further if you are moving faster!

This footage also demonstrates Yo-Yo. The attack is the Spiral Strike.

I'm working on compiling some strikes for an actual sample video...eventually

In order to perform a Spiral Strike, follow these steps:

1. Hook the center of the Titan's nape. (see correct wire placement for reference)
1.1 (optional) Use a left hook if you are equatoring to the right (counter-clockwise)
1.2 (optional) Use a right hook if you are equatoring to the left (clockwise)
1.3 (optional) Reel out to add distance between yourself and the titan.
2. Gas forward and rotate until you pass directly in front the titan.
2.1. (or) Rotate a few more times to pick up some speed and then rotate until you are in front.
3. Hold attack and reel in. Never stop gassing forward.
4. Reel continuously and spam attack to use the Overdrive.

It is vital to gas forward when you use this technique because it helps with reeling. Lock-on is not advised because it messes with the Overdrive. You can rotate as much as you before striking to gain speed, but keep in mind it is better to strike too early than too late. It is suggested to simply strike at your first opportunity. For more information on accelerating while using this technique, read my tutorial for Yo-Yo Acceleration.

You told me about this in the Hamachi, and while it's pretty risky, it looks nice enough.

Tthe funny thing is, it's only risky if you do it wrong or equator too much. This is actually really safe and simple if your wire is right and you don't circle the titan more than once. Circling it multiple times increases the risk.

Oh, so is one spin enough to get a high damage if you do it right?

Absolutely. More spins just means you can get a higher one.

So how high do you think you could pull it off, if you were like in a wide/flat plains-like area training map?

Beyond the 2000 barrier for sure! Best I've done in Forest is 1750.

edit: make that 1835 ;)

It would appear that this technique works on all titans except crawlers and CT. This DOES work on FT though! Got a 1-hit kill in normal using it.
Spoiler:
Remember, the key to this technique's success is to have a wire on the very center of the nape.
