Shingeki no Kyojin anime impression

Postby MysteriousPerson » Tue Oct 01, 2013 2:37 am

well, since i can't make a thread about this in the SnK anime discussion, i will make thread in here.

well as the title said and the anime is end like 3 days ago, what is the impression that you guys fell during watching all the 25 episodes of the anime.
you can give your opinion though in format :
*(manga reader dont spoiler , okay ;) )*

IMPRESSION :

CRITICS :

WHAT YOUR HOPING FOR THE NEXT SEASON :

YOUR FAVOURITE EPISODE :

and as the starter, i will start with mine

IMPRESSION :
Just a pure gold, the goosebump, the hopelessness. actually, many times i watching anime like this that give me the similiar feels (Death note, code geass, guren lagann, phantom inferno, etc), but its for the first time that i felt it really fit with my feeling.
and the filler, it gives a fucking great detail to the story (although its a little tiny bit from the manga, but its great).
and the opening song, it just fucking fit with the military theme, especially jiyuu no tsubasa. seriously i never skipped the opening from episode 1 - 25.

CRITICS :
well not much critics i can write in here, since it really exceed far from my expectations. the only critics that i can give is that eren is got in danger too much (seriously almost died, got kidnapped, never killed a single titan  )

WHAT YOUR HOPING FOR NEXT SEASON :
more character development
more hopelessness
more thrill in it.

YOUR FAVOURITE EPISODE : episode 2

IMPRESSION : I fell in love with the show on the first episode. The sense of humanity's desperation and the terror of the Titans was very well done. Most the characters are fairly likable/realistic, much like the city humanity now inhabits. I greatly appreciated many of the touches of realism - a non-christian based religion, the repairs needed on the walls, the way even accidents could be deadly, among other things. The realistic portrayal of their faces works much better than the typical overly-exaggerated anime faces for conveying terror, sadness, and pain. Another big draw for is they way the government is unfolded through the show, showing how it works, it's good side and ugly side, giving the you the perspective of someone actually in that situation (however, they should drop a name for the king or something. I mean, really, in a country of nearly a billion people, we can all name President Obama. We should know at least who the figureheads are for the government.) Oh yeah, one last thing I really, really love about this show - no freaking typical anime loli upskirt shots every 10 seconds. I'm staring intently in the direction of Sword Art Online as I say that.

CRITICS : Upon reaching episode 13.5, I knew this was not the brilliant, 5/5 anime that I though I had found. I have 4 main complaints with the series to date:

1. Flashback flashback flashback flashback flashback flashback flashback

We get it. Humans in AoT have abnormally triggered memories. The closer someone is about to die, the happier and more motivational of a memory they have. It's getting rather old, to the point where I no longer think, "Sweet, action is starting!" but instead, "Action is starting, so flashback soon, so bathroom break time." Flashbacks need to be reduced by a good 75%. They are a writer's tool, not his only weapon.

2. Plot Armor - I hate plot armor. I'm pretty sure most people hate plot armor. I didn't think this show had any, until Eren revived from the dead. I no longer fear at all for the safety of any of the main characters (i.e. anyone who has been in more than 40 total minutes of show time). Like, Levi isn't going to die soon. Neither is Armin or Jean or anyone else the fans like. Makes the sure rather boring when only sideline characters you don't care about anyway die. Also, making main characters die in season finales is NOT the way to go. Making character deaths lame and predictable has ruined my taste for the Walking Dead - I hope the author removes the plot armor from everyone. I'm looking at you, Mikasa and Armin. Survival rate in the Scouting Legion is only ~30%. Out of Eren, Mikasa, Levi, and Jean, only one, MAYBE two, should be alive for too awfully long.

3. Episode beginnings have WWWAAAAYYY too much replay material. Often you'll get the entire previous episode in about 2 minutes, then again for the NEXT episode after that. Same goes for quite a few memory sequences. During the appearance of the Female Titan, how many times did we have to listen to Levi say "you'll never know how it'll turn out"?

4. Slow episodes are slllllooooowwwww. They rushed this into production from the Manga, which saddens me greatly. It's becoming much more like Dragon Ball Z, with many long, drawn out fight scenes that would look better all at once. There was no reason to split the Female Titan fight between so many episodes. Many of the flashback scenes could be better placed during slow episodes, and keep the faster paced episodes faster paced, with fighting filler if anything, not flashbacks.

WHAT YOUR HOPING FOR THE NEXT SEASON : I'm hoping the next episode keeps up the slow outside exploration, as well as some delving into the biology/history of the Titans. Granted, I read the Manga, so I know what the next season has, and it's not quite what I want.

YOUR FAVORITE EPISODE : Episode 25, duh!

Well, damn, this was an old thread.
Anyways, since the contribution for its revival is good enough, I'll keep it alive.
Impression
What can I say? In all seriousness, it is an amazing anime, although it doesn't completely live up to its hype. However, it didn't have anything major I could complain about.
The fillers are decent to great in my opinion, depending on how they are used, although flashbacks could be shortened a good deal.
The OSTs were a really strong point, and really made the episodes shine. Pacing was weird at times, but nothing major.
The bonding to the characters was nice, and it really made me feel strongly during certain parts.

Critics
As Terramort said, pacing and flashbacks were eh, but nothing big.
Plot armor is something which shouldn't really exist, but they need to create new gimmicks and keep their main characters alive. Oh well.
Replay material isn't too big of a matter for me, but new material replacing it would be better.

What I want next season
More connections to characters, because I'm sort of masochistic for feels
More development for the backgrounds, histories, etc
More epic battle scenes

Favorite Episode
Episode 21 obviously.
The goddamn feels and the emotions could really be felt there, and having been spoiled by the wiki made it even worse, because I knew how they would all die.
